This is a project that is near and dear to my heart. Some time ago I was approached by Stephen Johnson the producer and creator of the documentary The Forgotten Birds. Stephen told me of the idea he had of doing a story about the International League Orioles which was the minor league team that played here in Baltimore from 1903-1954. He explained some of the ideas he had and even start sharing the historical facts and information about the players who played during this era. Myself being a sports fanatic and a lover of all things history was immediately drawn in. I was told that a song was being written and he would like for me to sing on the track.
Stephen had told me about a poem that Jimmy Keenan had written that tied right in with the story and the documentary. At that time the poem was being worked on to some how make it into a song. Once musical composers Norm Seifert and Carlos Olaguer starting working on the music they came up with a unique ragtime/dixie style of tune that really fit the time frame of the story. All the pieces were falling into place except the lyrics had not been arranged and edited for the music.
Stephen sent me a copy of the music and the lyrics and I went to work. With a little editing and arranging the final pieces some how fell into place and the song "The Forgotten Birds" was completed. I proceeded to record the lead and background vocal tracks and from the vision and idea of Jimmy Keenan's poem emerged this song that you are about to listen to.
